How Much Salt Does Your Horse Need?

When was the last time you gave your horse a salt supplement?

Salt is an essential part of a horses’ diet, regardless of the season. The average 500kg horse requires a minimum of two tablespoons daily, and that’s on a cool day doing no work.

Add exercise, work, or a rise in temperature… and your horses minimum requirement of salt can double or triple.

So, how do you calculate your horse’s salt requirements?

As a general rule, the average 500kg idle horse requires a minimum of 36 grams (two tablespoons) of salt daily.

Heavier horse? Add slightly more than ½ a teaspoon for every 45 kgs. Furthermore, add 1 to 1½ teaspoons more in warmer weather. Please note, these measurements are based on an idle horse (not at work).

Horse sweat contains approximately 0.7% of salt. The more your horse sweats from work or exercise, the more salt is required to replace what has been lost.

Why is salt so important for your horse’s health?

It provides a valuable source of minerals and trace elements, assists healthy digestion, acts as an electrolyte, promotes water consumption to reduce dehydration, as well as boosting nutrient absorption into the bloodstream for healthy cells bodily functions.

That’s why you should never underestimate the importance of providing your horse a salt supplement.

Ensure you’re meeting your horse’s salt requirements every day with our range of Himalayan rock salt supplements.

Why Himalayan salt?

Sourced from the nutrient-rich water and soil found in the Himalayan mountains, this special pink salt is hand-extracted and minimally processed for a more natural, additive-free salt product.

Due to its natural harvesting process, Himalayan salt contains more minerals and trace elements compared to regular table salt.

In fact, Himalayan salt contains up to 84 different minerals and trace elements. That is a lot more compared to regular table salt, which is comprised of two key minerals - sodium and chloride.

Some crucial minerals found in Himalayan salt include calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

For the active horse, magnesium is a must – giving tired muscles the nutrients they need to recover.

High in calcium, this essential mineral will help nourish and strengthen your horse’s bones, joints, teeth, and hooves.

Himalayan salt is also a great source of potassium, which is essential for a strong and healthy heart.

Give your horse the salt it needs with these Himalayan rock salt supplements:
