Dressage Bridles
Dressage bridles are really any bridle that you use when schooling or competing in Dressage. Dressage riders have the choice of a snaffle bridle or a double bridle. Under Equestrian Australia rules, a snaffle bridle is compulsory in all tests up to and including Elementary level. From Medium upwards, including all FEI-level classes, competitors have the choice of double bridles or snaffle bridles.
Bridles have to be black or brown only, and may have discreet padding on only the underside of the bridle, not on both sides. Snaffle bridles must have a noseband, and riders have the option of a drop noseband, a cavesson, a Hanoverian or flash noseband, or a grackle noseband. Many Dressage riders opt for the newer ‘rolled leather’ style bridles, which are slightly finer in shape than flat leather, and it’s also common to see a sparkly or ‘bling’ browband in a neutral colour. Patent leather is another popular option for the Dressage divas who want to stand out without breaking tradition.
Much of the choice of bridle is up to personal preference – what suits your horse will depend on its level of schooling, way of going, the bit they are using, the shape of the head and in terms of pure aesthetics, even the colour of their coat and mane! Whether you’re after a padded noseband, a comfort headpiece, removable flash noseband, a v-shaped browband or just a plain-Jane snaffle bridle with no bells and whistles, we have the right Dressage bridle for you and your horse.
