Premier Bits
A selection of stainless steel bits, both snaffles and Pelhams, which cover a variety of situations and training requirements, ranging from a simple jointed full cheek snaffle for a young horse in training to correction bits and a range of pelhams for more established work.
Premier bits cover the full spectrum of horse requirements, whether training or re-training. There are two variations of the full cheek snaffle for young horses, one with a jointed mouthpiece and one with a barrel mouthpiece, which has more play and movement. Many horses dislike the nutcracker action of a single jointed mouthpiece, and so, there is an alternative with a ported mouthpiece suitable for a horse with a large tongue that needs more room. There are two ported correction full cheek snaffles for established horses that have become difficult or evasive in the mouth. Both have a sole barrel at the top of the port with a choice of shape to the mouthpiece, either graduated or more sharply defined.
These mouthpieces are also available in a D ring snaffle from a simple jointed mouthpiece to a ported correction bit. The action of the D ring is similar to the full cheek as the straight section of the ring prevents the bit from being pulled through the horse’s mouth. It is also a popular starting bit, therefore, choice of mouthpiece depends on the shape of the horse’s mouth, the level of training and whether there are any established resistance or control issues.
The Pelham is a fusion bit, the combination in one of the two bits of the double bridle, the bradoon and the Weymouth. The Pelham has a multitude of uses, from an early introduction to curb and poll pressure ahead of a double bridle, to horses that simply need more control.
